Another superb addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe art books. I am exactly the target audience for these books, being a fan of Marvel, of movies, and of SFF art. Naturally I’m a huge fan of the MCU. I really like the fact that they have jettisoned the storyboards and substituted more set designs. Storyboards are useful when making a movie but are tedious when included in behind-the-scenes books. Reading comics as a kid I was always pleasantly surprised to come across architectural layouts for places like Avengers Mansion, the Baxter Building, or Alpha Flight’s HQ, or to encounter cutaway drawings of vehicles like the Helicarrier or Fantasticar. Since Ant-Man and the Wasp has both of those elements as integral to the story, it’s great to see so many pages devoted to that stuff here. Another bonus is seeing scenes which must have come from rough drafts of the film, getting a peek into what might have been. Some of the scenes look like fun and I wouldn’t be surprised if some version of them were included in future films, while others look incredibly involved and expensive, explaining why they were cut. Intriguingly (and frustratingly, if I’m honest), there are some things shown without explanation, such as two people wearing Ant-Man uniforms fighting as giants over the Golden Gate Bridge. What the heck was that about?! These art books underscore how designing movies is an iterative process, as the artists work towards solutions which seem obvious in retrospect but were anything but as they did their day-to-day designing. Two cases in point are the primary hero outfits. The final version of Scott’s suit looks like the stylized face of an ant, while Hope’s looks like a Wasp. But you can see them working their way toward that idea with each successive iteration. Whereas Ghost’s costume was realized almost immediately, and they did variations just to check themselves. (And some of the more fanciful designs are downright creepy, I must say.) So much cool stuff here, plus amazing art throughout. Few films have such a variety of styles and locations, from mundane offices to surreal atomic-level landscapes and everything in between.

I loved all of the concept art. It is so interesting to see the ideas and then the ideas leading up to that final product that we see in the film. Top marks for this, the film was great.
